Name: Nicholas Reeve ("Nick")
Age: 25
Birthday & Astrology Sign: April 2 (Taurus)
Arcana: Temperance
World Snapshot:
The main history of Gran Frontier starts about 100 years ago by standard interdimensional count. As various dimensions began to dip their toes into the exploration of the multiverse, a pocket dimension was found that seemed to generate an infinite source of adventures -- deep caves, ancient ruins, abandoned castles, all of which seemed to be placed almost at random, and all of which could appear and disappear at any given time. As word of mouth spread about the place, a small group of settlers decided that money was to be had creating facilities for the increasing volume of adventurers. Choosing the one area which had been determined to remain static, this settlement was named by the first mayor, a resident of an Earth-world variant, "Gran Frontier," in honor of the endless possibilities the land seemed to offer.
Time passed, and the settlement grew, with technology allowing more land to be claimed without worry of sudden and dramatic changes of the landscape. Little was thought of this arrangement until 20 years ago, when the first refugees arrived. The refugees, a band of about 100 people, were individuals who claimed to be from a world which had suddenly, violently, been destroyed, and had somehow ended up in Gran Frontier. The news of a dimension just suddenly disappearing was unsettling, but the people of Gran Frontier had large hearts, and welcomed the group into the fold. However, not long after that, another group appeared, citing a similar story.
The situation became complicated. As more and more refugees appeared, the politics of the situation became heated, with some complaining about the drain of resources, and others calling for understanding of the situation these poor people were experiencing. Things got worse when, about ten years after the flow of refugees began, the area around Gran Frontier, without warning, simply stopped generating new territories. Riots and clashes broke out all over the city, and it was only through the combined efforts of concerned refugees, the local church, and the government that the situation was reigned in. Still, a lot of lingering resentment remained in the air.
During the troubles, random shards had been discovered in various places around the city. Crystalline in appearance, many of them were turned into jewelry or collectors' pieces. One day, a breakthrough was made at the University of Gran Frontier: these shards, when tapped into with the right power, could create new places, much like the pocket territory had been able to do by itself. What was even more exciting -- and startling -- was that some of the refugees actually recognized the places being generated as ones they had been to before their worlds were destroyed. Dubbed "World Shards," the revelation of their existence began a hunt for them; as more parts of various worlds were discovered, more shards were found within their territories. Various factions began to form, each with different goals in mind for the shards. But more importantly, the adventurers, who had for years found their skills going to waste, had a new purpose: delve the new territories, and find the shards.
This is the world as it is now.
Backstory:
Nicholas Reeve, called "Nick" by his friends, had an early, unintentional brush with fame: at five years of age, he was the youngest of the first 100 refugees found. His memory of the world before the destruction is foggy at best, and only comes out in bits and pieces. The only thing found on him when he appeared in Gran Frontier was a pendant with the motif of a shield on it.
He was adopted at first by a fairly wealthy family; however, though he didn't realize it at the time, the family had adopted him largely due to the fame attached to adopting such a young, unfortunate victim of such a terrible situation. This arrangement soon proved to be untenable for them for two reasons: one, they had very little experience or mindset about rearing children.
And two, it turned out the young boy had an unexpected aspect: He claimed he could talk to ghosts.
He quickly learned to hide the truth, but the damage had been done, and not willing to put up with a child who quite possibly be clinically insane, they quietly put him back up for adoption. In some cases, this might be a situation which would lead to an unhappy childhood. However, luck was on Nick's side; though he no longer talked openly about his skill, a volunteer at the orphanage spotted him talking seemingly to thin air, and then relating details about the place of which there was no possibility of him knowing. The volunteer, Francis Reeve, was much more understanding and willing to believe than Nick's initial adoptive parents, and eventually signed the papers to take the boy in himself with his wife, Alice. The pair both cultivated his abilities and encouraged him to keep it low key, understanding that life could be quite difficult for him if he went too far either in suppressing or advertising his ability. In that sense, he became quite a well-adjusted young man -- or as well-adjusted as a guy who talks to the dead could be, anyway.
Besides his arrival and childhood, his other most life-shaking experience was during college. He met a woman, Calliope, who at the time seemed like a sweet, wonderful, sexy woman, and began dating her. At the same time, rumors began to spread of an illness that had been striking several young men in the area, leaving them weak, and in some cases dying. Nick found himself getting drawn into the investigation even as he himself began experiencing symptoms, and slowly came to the horrific realization that this woman he thought had fallen in love with him was, in fact, a succubus, draining the energy of all around her. Foolishly, he confronted her on this, and nearly died in the process; however, a pair of demon hunters who had also been pursuing the case -- and who Nick had been contacting with increased frequency -- stepped in to save him. She was banished, but not before placing a terrible curse on Nick in the form of a symbol on his chest. The symbol, when seen normally, was invisible, but when Nick draws close to demons, and particularly succubi, the symbol glows, burning his chest, while at the same time increasing his levels of panic and fear; this was her way of ensuring that no other demon could possibly lay claim to her prey for the day she anticipated she would be able to return. And worse, no way could be found to remove it. As a result, Nick tries to avoid dealing with that sort of thing as much as he can.
Currently, Nick works as a spirit medium and part time "ghost talker" and paranormal investigator, dehaunting through negotiation rather than with violence. With the revelation that his powers are of a psychic nature, he has been trying to enhance his abilities with the aid of a psion, though he's found that, for whatever reason, he can only defend, never attack. And it is still uncertain whether his ghost-talking came as a result of his violent upheaval from his world, or whether he was simply born that way...
Canon Standing: A somewhat well-established medium who frequently has to obscure his childhood fame.
Personality:
Nick is, thanks to having such understanding foster parents, actually a pretty well-adjusted guy. He can be a little overenthusiastic, somewhat bookish, and sarcastic, but otherwise he's fairly laid back. He has a very open mind in general to the existence of things, but can be a little boggled by the various eccentricities of living beings. (Dead ones, he figures, have an excuse.) He borders somewhere between "the straight man" and "the eccentric," and it can be a pretty fine line at times.
He's a negotiator usually, preferring to talk through a conflict first. His line of work almost demands that he knows how to be diplomatic, since he has to deal both with the skeptics and with people who only want to hear a specific message from their deceased loved ones and not the full truth. (Sadly, the latter are usually the ones that pay the most.) He also has to deal with spirits who either don't realize they're dead yet, or refuse to go unless specific conditions are met. Subsequently, he can be a deft handler of truth, knowing when to bluff and when to be honest. Generally speaking, he'll try to solve a problem with words first, aiming towards compromise and appeasement. As long as the demands are reasonable, of course.
When that fails, however, the kid gloves come off. Nick feels that the laws of the living are formalities, and when pushed can be exceedingly devious. He's willing to sneak into locations if it gets him the information he needs, and with bad guys, if he can't get you to see you've done wrong, he'll at least be sure to screw with you thoroughly enough that you'll think twice about doing what you did again. He's got more than enough tricks up his sleeve, and sometimes it's as simple as opening a discussion. Between you and your victims. Because they've got a LOT to get off their chests.
Finally, Nick is all about loyalty. If you're a friend or a loved one, he will do everything in his power to help you if you're in trouble. In other words, he's a great guy to have on your side -- and potentially surprisingly terrifying if you cross him. And we do mean surprisingly; he's definitely not a physical fighter, which makes him rather easy to make fun of at times...
A few notes:
- Since he was originally an AU, his icon set is still based around the original character he was spun off of. In that sense, it's important to note that while he RESEMBLES Phoenix, it's not perfect; he's a little ganglier, slightly taller, and lacks the distinctive eyebrows. His hair is also a little less long, but no less pointy.
- His world setting is, in case it's not obvious, a case of The RP Setting That Doesn't Exist. Which means that he has the potential to recognize characters. This is mostly a background detail, since anybody who comes from such a setting has the damn sense to keep their knowledge to themselves to avoid freaking anybody out. That said, if someone WANTS him to recognize them for some weird reason, which I can't imagine why, he can, but he still won't say anything. It'll just factor into his knowledge base.
Canon Powers:
SKILLS:
Note: Basic is what he can do without his focus; Enhanced is what he can do with it.
- Supernatural Vision:
BASIC: (Passive) Allows him to see things on the ethereal plane (i.e.) ghosts.
ENHANCED: (Mind) Allows him to see through glamours, charms and transformations. Also allows him to detect cases of possession.
- Ghost Voice:
BASIC: (Passive) Allows conversation with ghosts who might otherwise be unable to converse with the living.
ENHANCED: (Mind) Allows channeling of a ghost's voice to living ears. A standard medium ability.
BONUS: 10% natural resistance to silence.
- Spiritual Contact:
BASIC: N/A
ENHANCED: (Mind) Can grasp onto spiritual entities as if they were physically present. Requires a lot of concentration, however.
- Psychic Shield:
BASIC: N/A.
ENHANCED: (Mind) Increases defense briefly. Works 50% of the time like Tetrakarn.
- Medium:
BASIC: N/A. Nick can communicate with the dead, but cannot interact with the realm of the dead.
ENHANCED: (Mind) Allows Nick to summon and communicate with the dead. Does not work on those reincarnated rather than present in spirit form, however, and he cannot do this on a permanent basis.
- Psychic Tap:
BASIC: N/A.
ENHANCED: (Mind) Allows Nick to sort through spirits and attempt to contact the original possessor of a body psychically. Note that the current possessor may attempt to block this; success is based on either mun fiat or coin flip.
NOTES: Used to be more of a Psychonauts-style world exploration, but it was TOO much of a knock-off.
- Forced Contact:
BASIC: N/A.
ENHANCED: (Mind) Allows Nick to force one other individual to be able to see spirits for a short period of time. Can only be done once a day and leaves him completely mentally exhausted. NOTE: PERMISSION WILL ALWAYS BE REQUESTED.
FLAWS:
- Short-Sighted: Nick compensates for his ability to see spirits and the like by being short-sighted. This is completely corrected with glasses, but he's legally blind without them.
- Offensively Incompetant: Nick can neither learn nor utilize any abilities that either directly attack enemies or enhance the attack of others. This carries over to his Personae as well, to the point where any secondary Personae he uses will be exceedingly limited unless they're primarily defense enhancement or recovery based.
- Possession Curse: The curse given to Nick by the succubus in college is designed specifically to prevent any chance of claiming by other demons by making it extremely difficult for Nick to get close to any. The result varies by type of demon and power of demon, with the worst effect coming from succubi and the like. Of course, "demon" has a totally different meaning in SMT/Persona, so only the following demon types are applicable:
MAJOR REACTION (Burning pain at point of mark, shortness of breath):
- Night (esp. those pertaining to seduction)
MINOR REACTION (Tight chest, shortness of breath)
- Tyrant
- Fallen
Naturally, this is a bit of a double-edged sword. He can't get close to any demons, but any demons who want to avoid detection can't get close to HIM either. If this is a problem with some players, we can discuss workarounds, but this is otherwise a default state. Note that this also has the subsequent "benefit" of making him 100% immune to charm from these individuals -- but about 50% susceptible to every other status effect.

Even in other worlds, there are spirits. And sometimes, those spirits need a few last issues resolved. Like finding their murderers.
In Nick's experience, this was always one of the hardest things to deal with. The testimony of the dead wasn't good enough; too many people are inclined to disbelieve in so much as the existence of ghosts, let along their accusations. What these situations called for was decisive proof, and these were the moments where Nick had to change gears. For the time being, he wasn't a medium, or a diplomat. He was a detective, and the eternal rest of his client relied on his ability to find the truth.
This place made things even more complicated, though. He can feel even outside here the presence of demons inside the club where his leads have led him, the tightness in his chest a testimony to their sheer numbers. This isn't going to be easy. For the sake of that ghost girl, however, he has to do this. And he has to hope things would go smoothly, considering his own lack of offensive ability. The Persona would help him weather things, maybe, but a fat lot of good that would do if he couldn't get out of a bad situation.
He bunches his coat closer to him, steels his nerves, and prepares to enter. He can't do this for long, but he has to at least try.
